VOLUNTEER TRIPS
Trail Work and Artifacts in the Dixie National Forest
July/August 2014
This was my seventh Sierra Club service trip in as many years, and it was one of the best. I was joined for the fourth consecutive year by good friend Don ... and for the first time by my 16-year-old nephew, Dylan (who, of course, is featured prominently in these photos).
Our group of 16 volunteers worked in the huge Dixie National Forest in Southwest Utah. The jobs included trail clearing at about 7,500 feet; replacing signs at numerous trailheads; and helping the U.S. Forest Service archaeologists survey large swaths of open land for artifacts.
The scenery and sunsets were gorgeous. The weather was delightful. And the people were fantastic: Forest Service staff; trip leader; cook; and, as always, the other Sierra Club volunteers from around the country.
